My Trip to the Dentist (Goodbye Wisdom Tooth!)

I haven’t been to the dentist in some 10 years so when I was forced to go due to a decaying painful wisdom tooth, I was terrified! In typical Kathy fashion I got on the internet and researched all about wisdom teeth and their extraction. What I found was not reassuring in the least. Horror story after horror story filled with pain and more PAIN! Nope, I was not reassured.

That is why I am writing this post. Because mine is not a horror story, and maybe by reading this someone will be reassured.

It all started February 22 when I (re)discovered pain and wow, it was hell. I always thought I had a high tolerance for pain but a simple little tooth had me curled up on the couch not wanting to move. Suddenly, staring fixated at the wall- a meditation of sorts- was one of the best pain relievers out there. Unfortunately it was not very productive, so instead I became addicted to aspirin. Every 3 hours I popped another pill. Skip a dose and I was brought to my knees with a piercing, non-relenting pain. Something had to be done.

As previously mentioned, I haven’t been to a dentist in years, so obviously I didn’t have a regular dentist. I didn’t even have dental insurance, which partly explains my long lapse in care. So how does one go about finding a dentist? Referrals? Recommendations? References? Investigating the many offices? Those all sound like good ideas, but I found mine from a newspaper ad. That ranks right up there with the yellow pages, doesn’t it? Trust me, 2 days before my appointment I was really starting to question the wisdom of my choice. But I stubbornly stuck with my decision. Why? Perhaps I should add that it wasn’t your ordinary newspaper ad. Rather it was an advertisement for the office’s Feb 14 Have a Heart Day during which they offered free dental service to those who could not otherwise afford it. To me, that is a sign of a kind and compassionate dentist and I wanted to support such an office. So off I went to see Dr. Wezeman.

Flash forward to Feb 28, doomsday. My appointment was at 10:30 but of course I was up at 6 am, counting down the hours with dread. I was thankful when the hour finally arrived. At first glance, in the 10 years that I’ve been absent, not much seems to have changed in the dental world. That overpowering dentist office smell still hits you the minute you walk in the door. Yuck. The chair is still grey vinyl and the dental pick is still a dental pick. And yet now there are computer monitors in every exam room, attached to a network that lets everyone know your arrival time, time in the waiting room and in the chair, reason for visit (I was listed as a NP emerg ext), and the like. Even better than that was the X-Ray device. Simply plug it into a USB port, position the wand end properly in your mouth, take the necessary precautions (lead apron and all that), press a button and presto! The X-ray of your tooth is instantly displayed on the computer monitor! Wow! I was impressed!

But here is the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the nitty gritty details of wisdom tooth extraction. If you don’t like needles, stop reading now! Once the dentist determined that mine would be a Simple Extraction (thank god! that means my wisdom tooth wasn’t compacted or attached to the bone..the latter would necessitate a trip to an Oral Surgeon) we were ready to go. Back went the chair and then my gums were coated with a gel of sorts- extra strength Ambesol perhaps? Then out came the needle. I was warned of the ‘little prick’ that I’d feel, and indeed it was just a little prick…..but that little prick seemed to go on forever! Finally he withdrew the needle, but only to get another one and shoot again in another location! Good heavens! I can’t remember if it was a total of 3 or 4 needles as I did my best to block it out.

After the shots they sat me back up to sign some papers and watch an educational video on post-operative care. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely sign. I thought it was just nerves but turns out there was epinephrine in those shots. The assistant explained it was like drinking 10 cups of coffee in fast succession- that’s why I was so shaky. Papers signed and video watched, back down my head went. Time for the serious business. They handed me some safety glasses (that’s new to me!) and I closed my eyes.

The dentist explained that he’d be rocking my tooth. I would feel pressure but not pain. If I felt pain, let him know. I did feel pain and he gave me another shot, waited a bit, then started rocking again. One, two, three times and out came the tooth! I didn’t know it though because my eyes were still closed. After activity had been stopped for a while I asked what was going on. The assistant said “that’s it! Your tooth is out!” I was shocked! That was amazingly quick and painless!

Of course the story doesn’t stop there, because the pain comes when the anesthetic wears off, right? So, my tooth was out, they sat me back up, explained post-op care once again, wrote me a prescription for Vicodin should the pain get too bad, gave me some extra gauze and a plastic syringe to help clean the area, had me sit for a bit and then I was on my way….to pay the bill.

The bill, the bill. A part we all dread. I had an idea of the cost since I asked when I called to make the appointment. Still, I was extremely happy to see that no surprise charges were added. In fact, it seemed as if the office went out of their way to keep costs down (no excessive X-rays and what not), realizing that I didn’t have insurance. This was MUCH appreciated. I found out later talking to a friend that he paid more to have his wisdom tooth pulled, and he HAS insurance.

So I left with a swollen cheek and the advice to take a painkiller before the anesthetic wore off (in about 2 hours). Terrified of the potential pain, I drove to the nearest store to pick up from extra strength Tylenol and Motrin (I was hoping to avoid the Vicodin) and then drove home. I popped in a movie, settled on the couch and waited while I watched Two Weeks Notice, my pill bottles beside me.

I must be extremely lucky because the pain never came. It’s been 24 hours and I’ve never felt a thing. Certainly none of that horrific pain everyone talks about. I’ve got a gross looking blood clot where the tooth once was and I’m still restricted to soft foods, but no pain. Hooray!!!!

Final thoughts- if you live in Oak Harbor WA and are looking for a good dentist, then I would definitely give 2 thumbs up to Dr. Wezeman’s Office. The staff was superb! In fact, I’d call them more than a staff, I’d call them a family. Their web page (www.drwezeman.com) shows that they’ve been working together for many years and it shows. Everyone is happy and comfortable, which can’t help but make you feel, well, comfortable anyway. It’s hard to be happy with you are terrified! But I left happy, so that’s saying something. It does sound a bit corny to say they welcomed me into their family- and I was a stranger reading this I’d definitely be rolling my eyes- but they were certainly warm and friendly. Not cold, stiff, and strictly business-like, which is what typically comes to my mind when I think of a dentist office. I would without a doubt return to their office…thank goodness my stubbornness paid off!

nest
I noticed this nest growing under the eaves of the porch, so I asked Rob to knock it down. He did and that’s when he noticed these frozen residents. Photo op!

winter has come to western WA, which means many gloomy days….days that don’t exactly make you want to run outside and take pictures. today was an exception, sorta. we had a glimpse of sun amidst the clouds. i took advantage of this hint of natural light and decided to dissect my old laptop computer…a computer so old it came with Windows 3.1 (and to think, some of the young’ins probably don’t know what the heck Windows 3.1 is!). so of course i have to share.

until today i have been struggling inside trying to light my macro shots properly. the challenge is i’ve switched to a white background, which shows every shadow. not good. a real pro would avoid the shadows. an almost pro would fix it in photoshop. i can’t quite do either yet, but i’m getting there. practice makes perfect!

FedEx Drivers
January 17, 2008, 11:58 am

The interesting thing about FedEx is that none of the drivers actually work for FedEx. Wait, I should back up a bit and clarify something. To keep things simple, let’s just say that FedEx Express is a different entity than FedEx Home Delivery and Ground. They live in separate buildings far apart from each other and never communicate with one another. It’s as if FedEx Express is an entirely different organization that just happens to have the same name. Consequently, when I speak of FedEx, I am not in any way, form, or fashion speaking of FedEx Express. I am only referring to FedEx Home Delivery and Ground.

FedEx Home Delivery and Ground drivers work for themselves. (FedEx Express drivers work for the company FedEx). They are all Independent Contractors. They own or lease their vehicle; they own their route. It is absolutely one of the major difference between FedEx and UPS. UPS drivers are union. ‘nuf said, right? FedEx drivers aren’t. Shortly after I started working for FedEx my friend emailed me the following email from care2.com:

FedEx Ground advertises efficiency and professionalism. But when these delivery drivers try to form unions, they’re met with intimidation and propaganda - even firing.

Give benefits and respect to the people who make FedEx so successful >>

More than 15,000 FedEx Ground drivers don’t have a voice at work, or the ability to stand up to the company.

These men and women work long hours, often without benefits, are frequently harassed and even fired for supporting a union.

So why don’t the drivers just quit if they don’t like their jobs? FedEx makes them lease their own trucks (which cost around $40,000), so quitting can mean losing a major personal investment.

Resorting to nasty labor tactics to increase company profits is just not right. Sign today >>

Thank you for standing up in support of America’s hard-working families.

P.S. The National Labor Relations Board has already issued complaints against FedEx Ground.

And apparently there was even some sort of movement encouraging the public not to use FedEx for package delivery. Interesting. Unfortunately due to my newness to the position and the stress accompanying any new job- especially one that starts around Christmas- I was unable to get any driver opinions about the situation. That was a huge shortcoming on my part because personally I don’t understand why anyone would chose to work for FedEx rather than UPS. I suppose it’s nice to work for yourself, but there is something to be said about the good pay and great benefits that goes along with being part of the Teamsters Union. The only insight I got was during a brief conversation with fellow temp Greg. Last holiday season he was a driver for UPS. Evidently he had no desire to go back, hence his arrival on the scene at FedEx. When asked why, he said UPS drivers are just putting their time in. It’s just another job for them. On the other hand, FedEx drivers really care about the customer and delivering excellent customer service. Interesting. Yet why did the FedEx drivers seem to be so grouchy? Maybe it was just the stress of the season.

Here’s the job description to be an Independent Contractor for FedEx:

“Join 15,000 other small business owners and become an Independent Contractor for FedEx Home Delivery. Start and grow your own package delivery business with the power of the FedEx brand behind you. Own one or multiple routes with an established customer base while receiving sales and customer support from FedEx Home Delivery. Receive regular weekly income based on your own individual performance and business management skills; fuel supplement and customer service incentives are available. You must own or have the ability to lease from a third party a suitable vehicle.”

Hmmm, maybe next year I’ll try being a driver for UPS so I can experience first hand what the difference is.

Just another side note, although FedEx Home Delivery and Ground share the same building, they are separate divisions. I worked for FedEx Home Delivery, as they understandably needed the most assistance during the holiday season. My supervisors were Jason and Tommy. Yet Vinnie, who heads the Ground Division, trained our class. Not a huge deal, except that I was glad that after training, my time with Vinnie was almost non-existent. He’s a real firecracker and for some reason we butted heads. But that’s another story for some other time.

Whoops, another side note for those interested: according to Vinnie, FedEx only has about 27% of the market share. Wow. No wonder UPS hires Driver Helpers during the holiday season!

Random Bits: absolute zero and prison

Last night I watched Nova and their program about the quest for Absolute Zero. All I can say is WoW! and why didn’t I ever take a Physics class? That stuff is fascinating!! Here’s a webpage about Bose-Einstein Condensation….and if you don’t know what that is then you’d better get over there to read all about it!

In other ‘news’, according to the Oct 2007 issue of Budget Travel, there is apparently restaurant in Italy that is all the rage. What makes it so special? It is located in a high-security prison! In addition to making reservations, you also need to submit to a background check and receive security clearance just to eat there! To quote from Budget Travel “the restaurant, which is staffed with murderers and thieves, is an experiment in modern-day prison rehab: the idea is that reformed inmates can find work in the restaurant business upon release. (4 convicts have so far.)” Hmmmm, I don’t think I’ll be flying to Italy to eat there anytime soon.

And now for an unrelated puppy picture which gives you an indication of how I spend my time.

Locked Out

I have already lost my enthusiasm to write about FedEx. Which is a shame, really, because I do have some funny stories to tell.  Like the time I locked my keys in the van.  With it running.  With my cell phone inside. I usually leave the van running when I deliver a package. After all, most times I’m just hopping out for mere moments to drop a package off.  The problem is the auto lock feature. I must have elbowed the button on my out that time.  I was in the middle of delivering a Dell computer, which requires a direct signature by the future owner.  I had delivered one box and while the lady was signing, was going back for the second. My van door had closed in the meantime and when I went to open it, no such luck. I was flabbergasted. I did the ole walk around the van in disbelief while trying every door, looking puzzled as to how this could possibly happen.  The lady came over to investigate my delay and I told her what happened. She said, ‘well, it couldn’t have happened at a better place…my husband is a locksmith.’  I couldn’t believe it!! We went inside to call her husband and all I distinctly remember is a sign above their dining room table that read, “God is Gracious.”  Now you know I’m not a particularly religious person but all I could think was ‘Indeed He is.’  After all, somebody was smiling down on me that day!  A big Thank You to Bigfoot Locksmith for helping me out!!

FedEx Part 1

(I meant to write about FedEx while I was working there, but while I was working there I was too darn tired!  Let me try now and see how far I get)

Wed I got laid off from FedEx. Last Monday (my last day and yes, the day before Christmas) Vinnie came over and asked me if I was going to stick around after the holidays.  I replied, “if you had asked me that a week ago, I would have said no in a heartbeat…now I’m not so sure.” At that point I had been working for FedEx for a month. It took me that long to warm up to it.  Honestly, I’m surprised I warmed up to it at all. I distinctly remember one day when I went into work and wanted to turn around and walk back out! That was about a week into it. And now here I am feeling sorrow for the job ending. Somewhere along the way it got under my skin. Actually it’s not so much an ‘it’ because it’s the people that got under my skin…people that I only worked with 10% of the time!

I should start from the beginning but the beginning seems so long ago.  Everything happened so fast. I walked into the terminal to inquire about the position and the next thing I know I’m making an appointment for a DOT physical and drug test.  Okay, it was more like I walked in and was shown to a computer unto which I was to fill out an application.  I had barely said 3 words to Jason- the fellow in charge of hiring.  When I finished with the computer I was given some papers to sign then was told to come back tomorrow take a road test and watch some videos. I just rolled with it…and eventually rolled right into a week of training.

the puppies got a bunny last night.  the rabbit somehow made its way into the dog pen and, well, never made it back out.  we think Willy was the prime instigator as his head was covered in fleas when we finally got him back in.  that in and of itself was a bit gross, i’ll have you know.  the bunny was fine.  well, it was dead, i just mean it was fine in that it wasn’t torn to pieces or anything.  we think Willy just had time to give it the death shake…and then Rob noticed something queer was going on. that part terrier was coming out loud and strong in Willy last night, that’s for sure!   you can’t really get too mad at him for being a dog but  disobeying us (ie not ‘leaving it’) is another thing!

this is apparently the cigar box from the day i was born, at least that’s what i was told. what is up with the sad clown face over the owl?  a bit odd, yet oddly appropriate.

i had some other not-quite-artifacts (an official artifact is 50 years old…i’m not there yet) that i was scanning and saving when my hard drive crashed.  maybe someday i’ll work on scanning them again so that i can share.
